Hello,

I'm Alex

About

I'm a Social Worker & Black Feminist
currently based in Ypsilanti.

"I think that part of what a culture of domination has done is raise that romantic relationship up as the single most important bond, when of course the single most important bond is that of community." - Bell Hooks

My mother will tell you, from a very young age I have been captivated by unconditional love for people. This foundation has spread into language of knowledge and justice as I continue to use my voice to radically fight for unconditional love. I have a passion for healing & fighting for All Black Women and Gender Non-Conforming Black Folxs. This is with the firm belief that if we heal the most marginalized, we will uplift the entire Black community-thus the world. Black Feminist Theory/Thought believes in developing praxis-(prax·is /ˈpraksəs/)

(consciousness+action+reflection). If we arm Black Women and Black Gender Non-Conforming folx with knowledge, language, and validation of experience it will fuel action and reflection for community change.

As well, I believe that we need to fight for active policy changes that support the vitality of life and opportunity for Black Women and Black Gender Non-Conforming individuals at all sectors of our society (employment, incarceration, parenthood,student-life,romantic relationships,etc.). Community comes first and we need real and radical ideas for active change. I am here to learn from communities and advocate for justice.

Writing I am Proud of

"Every now and then I notice I’m hunching. My back is slumped over, as my neck hangs viewing the floor. I look up immediately asking myself the same question: how long have I been looking down?  Wondering if my back has been made permanent in this shape. Wondering if it will ever create a similar hump like my mother. "
“Proximity is the social construct created around whiteness. What white people deserve, and whom they deem worthy to protect. White communities with the help of the governments who also reflect their narratives, take entire communities and push them somewhere else. Somewhere they do not want to be, with people and toxins they don’t want to be around, and no resources to help them survive."

Concept Map: Theorizing Beyonce

“Lately, I have felt connected to Beyonce. I have found myself wrapped in past memories of me dancing and singing along to her lyrics. Arguing with other little black girls about who was going to be whom from the group Destiny’s Child.  Although I was always pushed to be Kelly Rowland for my resembling  dark skin and bright smile, my heart always yearned to be Beyonce. I know I am not alone."
“2 weeks ago I was a mess. I was once again crying on my floor asking myself the same questions. “Why am I like this?”  “ What’s wrong with me?” “Why can’t I let this go?” “Why do I choose chaos over peace?” You know the typical"
"There is still meat on that bone. Its okay I’ll explain .This phrase has several definitions. I’ve only heard them in two ways. 1.By those who believes that one has to eat all of the fat and slivers of meat between the bones of pig feet. 2. as a saying in the black church that signifies that at the end of the sermon the person receiving was not spiritually and intellectually fed."
